Monica and Matthew Weiss - Saphire Estates December 26, 2009

Monica and Matthew had a fantastic winter wedding at the beautiful Saphire Estates in Sharon MA. The weather cooperated to allow for a few outside pictures both before the ceremony and after. Talk about a fun and loving couple! They were just so cool to hang with and really had fun with the whole day.

Jenna and Andrew's Engagement Session

This engagement session was SO fun. Jenna and Andrew were so great to just hang out with, never mind actually take pictures! We couldn't have asked for better lighting conditions and these may be some of my favorite pictures taken all year just because of the amazing foliage, Asian garden, temple of music and architecture offered at the Roger Williams Park in Rhode Island. Absolutely gorgeous!

New Favorite Picture Ever Taken

I have a NEW favorite picture ever taken. There are so many things I love about this picture. First, it's not heavily photoshopped. The lighting on Katie is natural light with a side flash camera-right. I added the black edge and made the blue in the sky pop a bit, but that's it really. She really made it easy for me with her fun posing and showing a little sass. Her expression, the twist of her back, it all just comes together so perfectly. Dang, now I'm going to have to re-print all new business cards with this image. . .

NO FEAR

Most photographers would be freaking out losing their minds to think of an outdoor ceremony at noon in July on a clear day. Add to that the fact that the couple is inside a gazebo and everyone else is outside the gazebo.

Either the couple is exposed for thus blowing out everything outside the gazebo or the outside is exposed for and the couple is engulfed in shadow.

Today I hid a flash inside the gazebo just above the entrance facing the couple and got a perfect exposure on them as well as the outside of the gazebo!

I was absolutely thrilled! Honestly though, without trying to toot any horns or anything, it's just that kind of quick thinking and split second finagling that you hire a professional photographer for. This right here is what separates professionals from those who just go out and buy a cool camera and call themselves photographers.

Allison and Tony

Allison and Tony had absolutely perfect weather for a beautiful garden ceremony at Independence Harbor in Assonet, MA.

Christina and Jonathan Breault

Why pay for some expensive venue when you can have it all and so much more - in your own back yard?! Christina and Jonathan held a 4th of July wedding overlooking Plymouth Bay that any reception location would be jealous of.

Lindsay and Brandon

Does everyone remember a week ago Saturday with all that heavy rain and crazy weather? Well, that didn't stop Lindsay and Brandon from having a beautiful wedding day. The clouds parted and the sun shined just long enough to get some great shots.

Andrea and David

I know, . . . I know. . . every weekend I say "Oh, this place is my favorite" but seriously the Searles Castle in Wyndham NH is just so perfect. I mean, come on, it's a stinkin' CASTLE! I just love being there.

Oh oh, so I guess I had a little extra time to play with the pictures and really make them pop. I added a couple of fun cool things to really spice it up a bit.

I'm finally appreciating natural light a lot more lately. So many photographers use it as their crutch and I like to have more control with my own lighting, but no flash can do what a simple window can.

They are both just so adorably cute. They've both got these little smirks they share throughout the night.

Their videographer posed the above shot and a few others as well. He was really really great, you've got to check him out if you're looking for a videographer. It's Steve from Visual Excellence Video. Professional, extremely helpful, creative and not in the way at all. Very cool.

My new favorite picture ever. We've done the color splash on black and white, but we never considered putting a color splash with a wacked out color tone before.
I live for this shot. It haunts me and I think of it at all venues. But it's only here, at Searles. Every time I'm here I try to perfect it and I think this time I really nailed it good.

There's no better pose, no better look than when you're invisible to the subject and grab it without them knowing. This just says so much - and I love how her rings are the center of it.

I Love My Job

You know, some times there's just this one shot that you really really want to get and it keeps popping up in your head and you try to get it at different venues, but it's just not the same. This is one of those shots. I'm not at Searles Castle nearly enough and when I'm there I'm in Heaven. They have it all and I am so confident of the pictures I can get there. This shot is one of those shots that just makes me think - "Now you just got your money's worth". It's the type of shot no amateur with a cool camera could ever get and just really re-affirms my passion for this work. I love what I do and when I can get such nice shots for people it thrills me.

Jenny and John Raposa

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Seaport World Trade Center is the place! They've got SO much to offer and do such a great job. Jenny and John had an absolutely amazing wedding!!

Theresa and Alex McKenna

Endicott College in Beverly MA has this amazing property called Misslewood, sitting right on the water with beautiful views. Theresa and Alex dodged the rain to get some wonderful shots!

Just something I noticed

So, you ever notice, every single wedding at this point the father has to walk away from his baby girl and he ALWAYS has a head down in a defeated way. Now, to be quite honest he's probably looking down to avoid stepping on the train. I just think it really tells his side of the story catching him walking away like this. I've got two girls - and that instant right there will probably be the most crushing. I just thought I'd share that. . . It's a simple picture, but much can be read from it.

Lauren and David Middleton

You've GOT to check out this video! Lauren and Dave's wedding at the New Renaissance Hotel in the seaport district of Boston was unbelievable. The architectural elements in the beginning shots is what absolutely made it for me. The colors, the use of flash - I am so excited! Enjoy.

Amanda and Peter's Short

Pictures are great, but when presented properly such as in a video, an album or framed it can really take on a whole new feel. Getting just the pictures on a CD is like getting a head of lettuce, a tomatoe and an onion. It's not a salad until you start playing with it.

Berryphotos hit the streets of NYC

We just got back from a three day trip to NYC. Our album company GraphiStudio was hosting a seminar and presenting their new design software. We've been beta testing it for a while now. Too often those presenting it didn't know how to use it and Katie had to raise her hand so much to explain how it worked that the audience insisted she get up there and teach for about 30 minutes!

We had a fun time going around the city getting some fun and unique shots. This Animoto software is also pretty cool. We'll probably end up purchasing it and using it for shorts here and there.

Amanda and Peter's Wedding

Amanda and Peter planned their day so well. In the event of rain they had rented this amazing mansion in Providence, but still built in time for pictures in the park as well. We were not rushed at all because there were about two hours between the ceremony and the cocktail hour - so we got a ton of great shots. We really had fun with different lighting techniques and got some very dramatic pictures.

I'll get a slide show together and post the galleries later this week I'm posting this from an iPhone in NYC and can't really add more right now, but wanted to at least get these few up on the blog. I love these shots!

This past weekend we had a great opportunity to take some pictures of newborn Michael Junior. We were in the hospital room about 40 hours after he was born to get some great shots of him.

Tiffany and Dan

This wedding was shot by our staff photographer Heidi Finn. We absolutely love her style, use of natural light and saturation of colors. Heidi is picking up quite a few jobs for us and we plan on utilizing her more and more in the future. Any client who has signed for Keith will of course still get Keith, but when other potential clients ask about a date that Keith is already booked, we offer Heidi.

All New Easier Pricing on prints, framing and albums

We have taken several steps lately to make our pricing for prints, frames and albums as simple and affordable as possible.

Many have probably seen and/or received the album price sheet, for example, which was a grid like chart showing how much it would be to add pages or increase the dimensions of your album. Well, we simplified the whole process by simply making each additional page in your album only $5 - regardless of size or how many pages.

Likewise, our framing options have been drastically simplified. We have chosen 32 "Studio Favorite" framing options that are all priced the same. All custom framing orders include dry mounting, matting, glass and assembly. Beautiful wall portraits start at only $150 for an 11x14 and a full 24x30 is only $250!

In almost all cases the prices of everything have gone down! It's just a lot easier now. We'll be updating the website today and have a print order in to update our pamphlets.

I hope everyone enjoys this newer easier price structure.

If you are interested in getting one of your images framed, let us know. We'd love to help. It's affordable, easy and adds a nice touch to any wall.

Jen and Bob's Wedding

Here's a few more added from Jen and Bob's wedding. They full galleries will be going online tonight ready for viewing tomorrow!

Jen and Bob had an amazing day. Not only was the weather absolutely perfect, but our timing for everything couldn't have been better. We were able to do an full session in Boston of just the two of them, as well as everything else we normally do. Great stuff! We even got on the roof of the hotel for some more city-scape shots!

Jon and Christina's Engagement Session

Christina and Jon took a little time this morning for a very nice engagement session at the War Memorial Park in West Bridgewater. They're planning their July 4th wedding for this year. Should be VERY fun!

On Stage Dance Studio

This weekend is all dance. We're doing two full day sessions at Gina Kinsella's On-Stage Dance Studio in Brockton. The kids range in age from kindergarten to 12th grade and styles range from ballet to pop, jazz and hip-hop. It's a lot of fun.

Happy First Birthday Morgan!!!

Morgan turned 1 on the day of the shoot and she was a perfect little model. Sure she wanted to get up a bunch, but what did doesn't?! Kevin really had a fun time to posing for the camera. It was a morning session so the kids were wide awake and not cranky at all. We got some fun shots and some traditional formal shots.

Maura and Tony - Duxbury Beach

That's right, it's not too early for engagement sessions. In fact, its actually the perfect time of year. The beaches are empty, so we can do quite a bit without restriction and without other people getting in the way. The town beach in Duxbury is quickly becoming one of my favorite beach locations for shoots. During swimming season it's a town beach that requires a sticker, unless you show up late in the day.

I tried out some new lighting equipment on this shoot. Although I think the pictures came out beautiful, I quickly learned that my current system is way better than the one being proposed by Nikon. . . It didn't have any impact on the pictures though

Spring Portrait Special

Our annual Spring Portrait Special is taking on a whole new feel. This year's focus is on babies, but please don't let that stop you if you're not quite 'there' yet. Here's the deal, $50 in studio for unlimited pictures, outfits and poses per couple/family. You'll get all your pictures on DVD with a copyright release. Real nice and easy! This special is basically going to run until the High School Senior Portrait sessions start to kick in mid-summer, so if you want in please contact us sooner rather than later.

Also, we're offering something a little new. Host a Picture Night for your family and friends. Give it a theme such as Glamor Shots for the girls, or have it during the day for all the babies you know. We can either come to you and set everything up at your place or you can come here. Bring in all your couple friends for pictures, or get all your friends with kids together and we'll go through them all for only $50 per couple/family. Same deal, get all the pictures on DVD with a copyright release. We've done this a few times and it is really fun. On top of all that, if you're the host and bring more than 5 couples/families you get yours free!

Contact us today to set your date!

The kids don't have to be perfect and we don't have to worry how many pictures we're going to take. Let them get goofy and truly capture who they are instead of screaming at them to sit up strait and smile.
Girls, you know you want glamor shots!
For a slight additional fee we can do magic to your pictures by smoothing the skin, brightening your eyes, whitening your teeth and flushing your cheeks. This lady is 53 and has 4 kids!
OK, she's not 53, but still. . . she does have 4 kids though. . .
We can set up anywhere and really make it a casual fun experience.

Facebook

Please feel free to check us out on Facebook and join our Group. You can keep up on our latest specials, see some of our most recent pictures and see what people are saying. There's also discussion boards such as "Ask the photographer" and so much more. See you there!

Our first attempt at an ad

I was so excited to create an ad, put a lot of time into and was very proud. That is, until a friend asked "Did you pay attention to the words in the music?" Oops. . . maybe it's not the best to put on the website. Not quite 'bridey'. But now I think it's hysterical and definitely worthy of the Blog. Leave your comments below, I'm interested to know what you think!

video

Below is an email sent to all 2009 and 2010 wedding clients:

I just wanted to take this opportunity to update you on a few things going on here at Berryphotos. I’ll keep it short and sweet:

  • We updated our website and there’s two great links off the wedding page. The first is an online form you fill out just before your wedding that gives us a bunch of info we need for the wedding day and gives you a PDF of helpful tips http://www.berryphotos.com/WeddingInfoForm.html.
  • The second is an online form that aids in the album ordering process and offers price lists, cover options and a whole bunch more http://www.berryphotos.com/AlbumLayout.html . Hopefully those will be helpful to you.
  • Speaking of albums, we have created a blog that shows every album we’ve laid out in the past year. The cool thing is you can search by reception location or church, so maybe there’s one for your reception location you could check out http://berryphotosalbums.blogspot.com/.
  • OK, Economy. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that we’ve reverted all our album, print and framing prices to their 2007 prices! We know the economy is tough, so rather than raise our prices, we’re lowering them – hoping to get more sales. Pretty simple, but helpful to you too J
  • Along that theme, I just wanted to remind you of our referral program. For any new client that signs a contract and simply mentions your name you get a $100 credit toward your album, prints and framing orders. We’re not asking you to be our sales team, we simply want to offer a humble and genuine Thank You if you were so kind as to refer someone to us. There are a lot of bridal attendants, friends and co-workers out there. . .
  • OK, last, so I don’t have to bother you with long emails again you can check us out on Facebook. Just search for Berry Photos (not Keith Berry, I’m keeping that one private J ) We’ve also got a group with discussion threads too. I’ll send you an invite.

As always, as we get closer to your wedding please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. We’re always a call or email away
    !

Three more sample albums

Our goal this winter was to create three sample albums to place at some of our favorite venues. Just this past week we dropped off albums at White Cliffs in Plymouth and the Coonamessett Inn in Falmouth. This coming week we plan on dropping the third at the Seaport hotel and World Trade Center in Boston. This year we'll be keeping an eye out for additional venues to add to this list. Things we look for are how they treat their brides and grooms, how they treat their vendors, availability of great photography locations and feedback from clients.

One thing we refuse to do is pay to add our name to a venue's "Preferred vendor list". Some venues actually have their preferred vendors pay to be on their list. That's either called advertising, or kick-backs, but it just doesn't seem right. I guess those locations prefer money.

Any place we associate with will refer us because they've worked with us and know our service and product and feel comfortable referring us to their clients.

To see some of these sample albums go to our Albums blog at http://berryphotosalbums.blogspot.com/

A Whole New Look

This picture has absolutely nothing to do with what I wanted to post about, but I just absolutely LOVE it.

Anyway, we have just completed a huge off-season objective of completely re-vamping our website from scratch.  It was a very big project that took a ton of time and effort, but I think it came out exactly how I wanted it.  Some of the toughest things were the hosting and the calendar.  First the hosting:  So the old site was made with Microsoft Frontpage that's basically antiquated and not even supported by MS anymore.  I've got this beautiful Mac and everyone says iWeb is great.

So, I make it in iWeb and go to publish it and find that the MobileMe host is extremely limited and doesn't support MySql, nameservers or a host of other tech type stuff.  So, now I had to figure out a way to put it on my original host and publish from there.  Remember, I'm a photographer - not an IT guy.  Next the calendar.  I won't boar you with the specifics but basically I had to figure out what a MySql is, understand php files and scripts and all kinds of crap.  So after many days of frustration and staying up very very late - it's done!  We won't even talk about Blogs.  Oh, man.  I'm sticking with Blogger.  It's just easier that way. . .

But, a huge off-season task complete. A big weight off my shoulders that I've been dyeing to do all year.  We also got three sample albums completed to have on display at three more venues.  Very productive winter so far!!!

Ringing in the New Year with style

Laurie and Matt kicked in the New Year with style. They didn't let a little snow and frigid temperatures deter them. Nope, they boldly stepped out into single digit temps to get some great exterior pictures and then partied the night away to midnight inside.

Blizzard Wedding

Remember December 19th? That Friday night storm that dumped over a foot across the region? Well, Kaitlyn and Marc had a winter wonderland wedding at Barkers Tavern in Scituate.

The snow was coming down really, . . . really hard. Probably more than an inch per hour and almost like white-out conditions. We all knew that we wanted to do some outdoor night photography pictures though. So, we said what-the-heck and went for it anyway. Right at the main entrance to the hall we stood under the awning and got these shots. With a side flash we lit them perfectly and got a lot of great detail with each flake lighting up.

Night Photography and winter weddings

With winter weddings comes night photography. Who says you can't get amazing wedding pictures during the off-season?! Below are a few examples of some wonderful pictures taken in the past few weeks. Also, the Christmas decorations really add a nice festive touch!

Quick Post about Albums

As a helpful tip toward getting your album completed, the winter is the best time for us to dedicate toward creating your album while the shooting is slow. If you wait until Spring a new season would be under way other things will be competing for our time such as Dance Studio picture sessions and High School Senior yearbook sessions. Contact us today about your album and we can have plenty of time over the winter to dedicate.

My Big Beautiful Greek Wedding

The Perfect Storm

That's what they call it when all things converge to make something truly spectacular that's out-of-this-world. This past weekend at Granite Links in Quincy we saw just that with Heather and John's wedding. From the organization and thorough planning of the event coordinator and DJ to the weather holding off despite all the poor predictions.

The thing that topped it all off was getting to take pictures at the Granite Links ruins. A place on-property that is just amazing. Last time I was there it was raining, so I didn't have the opportunity to use it. Linda from Granite Links was really helpful in getting us down there and I was just blown away.

I can't wait to shoot there again. They do a great job there and Heather and John had a wonderful wedding. It all converged just right (like the perfect storm) to create a truly fantastic event.

Check out the slide show of this wedding!

The High Sea's

This past Saturday's wedding was in Newport at the infamous Ocean Cliff Estates. It's an absolutely stunning location. Well, after a great ceremony and reception we all headed out on a chartered schooner on the bay! It was just perfect. The sunset, the crisp air, the water. It all made for a perfect end to a perfect day. I wanted to share these shots because really, how often do I get to have pictures of such a beautiful boat as part of a wedding.

Oh, and I was on the boat having a great time. The pictures of the boat from the shore were taken by my able assistant James.

A Break From The Norm

Tonight I had the pleasure (ok, actually down-right blast of an amazingly great time) to do an engagement session with Shirley and Steven at the Marshfield Fair. We began at Rexham Beach which is just a few miles away and got some great sunset shots, then on to the fair. To say we had fun would be a huge understatement.

It was so cool to just experiment with different settings to get different types of shots including night photography with delayed exposure and dragging the shutter. Check them out:

Sunny Days and flash

Picture it - 2pm on a very sunny day. You're asked to take a bunch of pictures on a beach that faces directly into the sun. What would the expected picture look like? Well, in most cases it would silhouette the subjects. They would be very dark and the background would be nice. OK, so instead you can try to compensate for the subjects. You get them to have a great skin tone and see the detail in their clothing - but oops, now your background is blown out with no definition and you can barely tell where the water ends and the sky begins.

This past weekend I faced just this situation - on the fly. We ended up getting some amazing pictures.

I heard people wondering, why is he using flash when it's so bright out? Well, notice the shadows above. They're heading toward the camera. The only way to compensate for the sun is to push back with an equal or greater amount of flash. Not to sound weird, but really not many wedding photographers do this. Look at these below. The first was purposely taken to show how the camera would take the shot without any modification to the settings or addition of secondary flash:

In the above situation I'm using natural light trying to get a sunset shot. The sun is still a little high. Their skin and clothes look fine (a little dark but can be fixed) but the sky is blown out. Not very appealing, right?

Here we used a side flash and adjust some settings on the camera and get a very dramatic sky with perfect lighting on the two of them. This is the kind of stuff you need to look for when determining who to hire. When checking out photographers look at the lighting, the composition, the detail. Don't be swayed by the fact the bride has nice bridesmaid colors of the architecture of a building is nice. Look at skin tone compared to the definition of the sky and clouds. Most photographers don't shoot a wedding with a second flash. We wouldn't shoot a wedding without.

I only put this in the blog so people can know what to look for when checking out photographers. Anyone can pick up a camera and shoot, but sometimes you can be faced with a tough situation and you've got to know how to work it. Also, every picture presented needs to be better than any other picture taken by any guest who happened to buy themselves a nice camera.

Candid's

I just think natural candids are so nice and can be taken at the oddest times.  For example, the above picture was taken without the bride realizing while she was having the back of her dress tied up.  It's so natural and elegant yet un-posed and just "As-is".

Here's another great example.  The lighting is directional from camera left and highlights his hands around her waist, but was taken un-posed during their first dance.  They weren't aware this picture was being taken.  I think a lot of times people see the really good pictures presented on a photographers website and think "Oh, that must have been posed" but in reality it would be a lot more difficult to stop everything and pose such a shot.  Getting it natural looks a ton better, more realistic and simply nicer.
